The Water Is Wide

(Trad. arr. Eva Cassidy)

The water is wide I cannot get over
And neither have I wings to fly
Give me a boat that can carry two
And both shall row my love and I

Oh love is handsome and love is fine
And love's a jewel when it's first new
But love grows old and waxes cold
And fades away like morning dew

There is a ship it’s sailing the sea
It’s loaded deep as deep can be
But not so deep as my love for him
I know not if I sink or swim

The water is wide I cannot get over
And neither have I wings to fly
Give me a boat that can carry two
And both shall row my love and I

And both shall row my love and I

Lyrics identical for #1 and #2. As a child Eva learned this song from her father, Hugh Cassidy (see Laura's AT songs page). Several Cassidy family favorite artists also included the song variously known as The Water Is Wide and Waly Waly in their repertoires: Pete Seeger, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Harry Belafonte, Odetta and others. See below. Except for slight verbal variations TWIW stanzas 2-3  are identical with Waly Waly st. 2-3. Waly Waly repeats st. 2 as its fourth stanza; only its first stanza is without a counterpart in TWIW. Also see notes to Waly Waly.
More than a dozen threads at Mudcat Cafe are concerned with this song and WW.
